How Expert Drawing Interpretation by Our Expeditor Prevented a 2 Month Delay

Project Overview
Our client, a leading global OEM in the metallurgical industry, provides pioneering solutions for both ferrous and non-ferrous sectors. In this project, they were tasked with delivering stove shells to one of the largest steel companies in the country under an aggressive deadline. On top of that, a strict Late Delivery (LD) clause meant there was no room for error.
Project Challenges
In metallurgical projects, it is typical to deal with heavy fabrication, tight timelines, and multi-functional execution, all of which require constant attention to detail. In these conditions, even small execution gaps can quickly impact cost, quality, and delivery.
The following were the core challenges observed in this project.
- 300+ drawings required interpretation, and a single misread could have created a serious risk of incorrect machining.
- 500 MT equipment units meant that any fabrication error would take weeks and a significant cost to correct.
- 2.5 months of projected delay arose from resource overload, pending BoM items, and slow post-clearance progress.
- 5+ functions needed tighter alignment, as fragmented coordination increased inspection failures and rework.
- 16 equipment units progressed in parallel without central visibility, hiding critical-path delays and slowing corrective action.
The Venwiz Solution
- On-site Expeditor Deployment: A dedicated expeditor was stationed at the vendor location to monitor day-to-day manufacturing progress and drive recovery actions.
- Daily Component-Level Tracking: The progress of each sub-component across all equipment units was monitored daily. Bottlenecks were highlighted early, enabling timely corrective action.
- Capacity and Resource Alignment: Vendor manpower and resource loading were reviewed weekly to prevent delays created by overload on the shop floor.
- Closure of Pending BoM and Long-Lead Items: Pending BoM items were identified and closed through focused follow-ups. Long-lead BoIs were tracked end to end to ensure smooth material flow.
- QC and Inspection Coordination: QC readiness was aligned with both client and vendor teams. Inspection schedules were planned to prevent idle time or rework during stage inspections.
- Technical Intervention on Incorrect Drawing Interpretation: The expeditor identified the subcontractor’s misinterpretation of a key engineering drawing before machining began. This prevented rework, avoided material wastage and removed the risk of an additional two-month delay.
- All long-lead items were closed through continuous follow-up, ensuring timely material availability and preventing slippage.
