Preventing 750 MT of Structural Steel Rework Through Proactive Expediting

Project Overview
Our client, a major EPC company, secured an overseas contract for 13 structural towers for a process industry. The order required extensive technological support structures to be designed and manufactured in accordance with ASME standards.
The client subcontracted this work to a vendor. While the client provided the design, the vendor was responsible for procuring materials, as per the Bill of Materials (BOM).
Given the scale and complexity, precise alignment between cutting plans, fabrication drawings, and shop-floor execution was critical. The client engaged Venwiz’s expediting services to oversee the structural work and mitigate delays through proactive decision-making and real-time monitoring.
Project Challenges
At the heart of the project was a structural system built on complex bolt-and-nut configurations to secure heavy components.

In execution, it introduced a set of challenges that impacted visibility, sequencing and on-site alignment.

Further, several critical technical and logistical hurdles threatened the project's budget and timeline:
- Unauthorized Production Volume: The vendor began cutting Column A sections for all 13 structural steel towers (approx. 105 MT), despite only 4 tower drawings being officially released.
- Inaccurate Cutting Logic: A standard 10 mm reduction was applied to all columns and beams (A & B sections), despite drawings calling for variable reductions of ~2–10 mm based on connection requirements.
- Limited Client Inspections: Inspections were scheduled at the black inspection and mock-up assembly stage, after section cutting, fit-up, and welding were complete. At that scale, any late-stage error identification would have led to substantial rework.
The Venwiz Solution

- Expert Workflow Integration: EEG worked with the client to revise cutting plans in line with the 105 MT of structural steel already processed, ensuring executed material did not turn into scrap.
